Selena came into Belle’s Bridal Boutique in Abilene, TX about a year ago searching for her dream wedding gown.  I remember her very well.  She was sweet and quiet.  She selected her gown on her 1st appointment.  Over the course of the next 10 months we got chatty and noticed that we both love Disney World!  They honeymooned at our favorite resort at Disney.  She was SO much fun!

Selena also won one of the photography promo paks a couple months ago.  Here are some of her bridals.  Isn’t she gorgeous!!!  We laughed our heads off while shooting these bridal portraits.  Congrats you guys!  You are both awesome people and it was a pleasure to have served your family during this time.

How to Look Smokin’ Hot on Your Wedding Day

Filed under: Bridal Gowns, Photography, Store News, Wedding Ideas — admin at 7:16 pm on Thursday, February 12, 2009

apryl2

This little post is dedicated to looking smokin’ hot on your wedding day.  And not giving in to the temptation of the frump.  (aka NOT looking frumpy on your wedding day).  Yeah, I said it.  Some brides may be happy wearing a their wedding gown, underpants, deodorant, and that’s it.  But most gowns NEED more than that to look their best.  I kid you not.  You may think it’s just more crap that you have to buy and the bridal shop is just trying to pull one over on you.  But, it isn’t.

Mike Ward, at Belle’s Photography has been telling brides not to skip the foundations for years.  If a guy is willing to tell you this, then it must be important.  Mike’s clients typically pay in excess of $5K for wedding photography, so they want tips on looking their best.  This is one of the best tips to look beautiful, polished, and pulled together on your wedding day.  You never want to hear someone looking at you and using the word ‘frumpy.’

So here is the skinny on what you need what for and when.  There are 4 basic necessities each bride should consider.  Your bridal shop should help you with selecting what is correct for you, your figure, and your gown.  Belle’s Bridal Boutique in Abilene offers this service to each and every bride who shops here.  We can also tell you the least costly and most comfy way to achieve your ‘look.’

Item #1 - The Bustier

bustier

This bad boy will hide a multitude of sins.  A bustier is a bosom-to-waist control garment, which is usually made of satin. Additional features may include detachable garters, push-up cups, flexible boning, optional shoulder straps, and hook and eye closure.

Why do I need this thing? Control.  Simply put, a strapless bra lacks support needed to wear most wedding gowns.  If your gown does not have a bustier built into the bodice, then you should consider this thing.  Reason 1 - it smooths your torso and streamlines your curves from bust to waist.  Reason 2 - it gives you lift.  Weather you are a AA cup or a DDD cup, you need support.  You may need it for different reasons, but you need it.

Is it really uncomfortable? If you can manage a bra, you can swing a bustier.  It offers moderate support through the tummy as well as the bust.  Most bustiers have a low back, so that it can be worn with a low back wedding gown.  If your gown is constructed of taffeta or another light weight fabric, then you can consider a seamless foam bustier.  This bustier is missing the boning (think of it as under wires) that runs through the regular bustiers vertically.  The boning gives the bustier more support.  The foam bustiers are molded, often have a push up cup, and offer a seamless option.  They do the same thing as the traditional bustier - they smooth and support.  That’s what you want.

Item #2 - The Petticoat

petticoat

A petticoat is a type of slip that a woman wears under her gown.  It often has layers of ruffles to make the skirt of the gown fuller.  Petticoats are something that are skipped by many brides if they did not buy a ballgown.  BIG MISTAKE.  One of the biggest reasons bride’s look frumpy on their wedding day is due to lack of a petticoat.  I know some of you are thinking, I don’t want to wear that.  But come on, how often are you going to be a bride and get to wear one?  Petticoats are fun.  They swish when you move, air can circulate under them.  Regular petticoats are lined too so the crinoline isn’t scratching up your legs.  So its swishy, fun, airy, and soft.

If you have an A-line gown (its NOT fitted to your body) a petticoat will make your waist look thinner, as well as removing the frump factor.  The petticoat holds the skirt in place while you walk.  Keeping the hemline wider than your waist creates an optical illusion and makes your waist appear smaller than it is.  What girl doesn’t like that?  And the layers typically end at your ankle so you don’t need to worry about tripping on it either.

There are many kinds of petticoats.  They come in different shapes and sizes.  As you may already know, there are a million variations of an A-line skirt.  Your bridal consultant can assist you in selecting the proper petticoat.  One of the most common specialty shaped petticoats we sell is the mermaid.  Its a fitted slip to the knee and then flares out to support the skirt on a mermaid wedding gown.

Item #3 - The Corset

corset

You may have thought that the corset died with chivalry, but they are still alive and kicking.  And for good reason.  A corset can offer support unmatched by any of its more comfortable counterparts (the merrywidow, bustier, strapless bra, nu bra, and body suits).  That is the main reason why the corset is still around.

Now, I have to point out.  Most corsets that you will find in stores are lingerie.  They are not shaper corsets.  A shaper corset does just that - it offers shape.  It can pull you into an hourglass figure or as close to it as you want.  The shaper corset comes in different lengths.  It can extend from your bust to hip, bust to waist, under bust to hip, or under bust to low waist (also called a girdle).  The corset material is typically a thick satin or damask, with boning for support, hook and eye front closure, and a lace up back.

There are 2 laces on a shaper corset.  A top lace and lower lace.  When laced properly, they meet at the waist (or middle).  The laces are tightened from the top and the bottom of the corset to keep it from shifting while being tightened.  It also gives a better shape and a better fit when laced this way.  A shaper corset also has metal grommets on the back.  This is so the laces can be pulled tight and can support pressure.

corset2

What do corsets do? Obviously they shape.  And they shape better than any of their sister garments mentioned earlier in this post.  A corset can flatten your stomach, cinch your waist, narrow your hips, and give you a bigger or smaller bust line (depending on how you lace it).  It’s wonder underwear!  It’s also smokin hot wedding lingerie.

Belle’s Bridal Boutique carries prefab white shaper corsets.  We typically have several sizes in stock.  Those come with a matching thong and garters.  We can also order a custom Old World bridal corset.  These have a higher price tag, but are so insanely beautiful, and offer the best support.  Custom corsets take about 16 weeks to arrive.  So plan accordingly.

Item #4 - Panties, Thongs, and Seamless Control Panties

OK, here are limited definitions in case you’ve been going commando so long you forgot.  ;o)  Panties are full coverage front and back, thongs (and g-strings) offer front coverage and minimal back coverage, and seamless control panties are something like Shapes or Spanx.

Embarrassing scenario #1 - If you are wearing a white wedding gown, and, let’s say that it’s made out of white chiffon.  So you have on no petticoat because you have a flowing skirt.  Hmmm.  What kind of underpants should you wear?  Rosebud panties are so out.  Don’t even think about it.  People will able to count the rosebuds on your butt as you say your vows.  Do NOT be that girl.  If you wear a panty, chose a nude color - that means it is solid and close to your skin tone.  Why?  So no one can see it!

Embarrassing situation number next.  You are wearing a clingy silk wedding gown with a built-in bustier and granny panties.  They are nude colored, but people can still see them.  Do you know why?  Silk does not hide ANYTHING, including panty lines.  Its time to consider your other options - thong or Spanx?  If you can see a slight shadow on your gown when facing the mirror at the waist of your thong, you can see it.  And you will have to wear a seamless thong or Spanx.

When do you wear a control seamless panty? When you want no panty line and you want support through your tummy and a little lift to your derriere.  Typically you wear this under fabric that is extremely unforgiving and clingy.  It smooths, flattens, and lifts.

gown2

Comfort & Drawbacks

Let’s just cut to the chase.  I know what some of you are thinking.  I want to be comfortable.  There are different levels of comfort.  There is sweatpants on a rainy day wit fuzzy socks comfort and there is comfort anticipated to look smokin hot. Sweat pants are NOT smokin hot.  So don’t compare apples to rocks - sweatpants comfy is not wedding day comfy.  On to the comfort levels and drawbacks of each item.

Out of all this stuff, what is the most uncomfortable? As a woman who has worn all this stuff at one time or another - seamless control panties (like Spanx or Shapes) by far, hands down, are the most hot and uncomfortable.  That should bring a sigh of relief since most women have worn these in the form of control top panty hose at some point.  Kind of a pain to take on and off.  Kind of hot.  Kind of sticky.  Was it worth it to look hot in your little black dress?  Yes.  And this was the most uncomfortable out of all of this stuff?  Yes.  Be encouraged soon-to-be-frumpless brides.

You thought I was gonna say the corset, right? The corset actually isn’t that bad.  It’s not like wearing sweats, but it’s not bad.  It doesn’t dig in the way a cheap bustier does (or if you have a big chest, the way most bustiers do).  It feels more like a tight hug offering support through your torso as long as you don’t lace it too tight.  Minor problem, you can’t bend over and fold yourself in 1/2.  But you are bride in a big wedding gown, so it’s not like you are going gardening or getting stuffed into a locker before your wedding anyway.  Additional perk - its functional bridal lingerie.  Oh la la!

Bustiers offer good support for most brides. The lift your bust and trim your waist.  Plus size brides may find that they do not offer enough support.  You can tell this is happening if your bustier boning bends under the weight of your chest.  You can find a better made bustier or look into a corset.  Bustiers are about as comfy as a bra with an underwire when it fits correctly.  Don’t guess what size you are - ask the consultant.  Most women are wearing the wrong bra size anway, so it’s normal if don’t know what size you wear.

Petticoats are comfy imho. They are soft, fluffy, and fun.  It’s like having a little portable pillow tied to your butt all night - that makes you look skinny!  Make sure its lined, and you’ll be fine.  And if you need a custom petticoat, Belle’s Bridal can do that for you too.  We have some customers who order hoop petticoats.  That is where the shape is being held by boning rather than layers of fluff.  A hoop petticoat is  a light and easy way to get the volume of multiple petticoats without the weight.

And how much is all this stuff? The average bride can escape the frumpy funk for around $100.  Considering how much you are putting into your wedding, isn’t $100 so worth ensuring you look perfect?

Planning a Wedding in 6 Weeks

Filed under: Bridal Gowns, Photography, Store News, Wedding Ideas — admin at 1:00 pm on Monday, January 19, 2009

Carmen is one of the sweetest brides I’ve ever meet!  She came into Belle’s Bridal Boutique (located over by Copper Creek restaurant on Loop 322 in Abilene) with a limited amount of time to plan her wedding - only 6 weeks!  Carmen had a total time crunch.

The moment she walked into Belle’s one of our expertly trained consultants began to speak with her about her ideal wedding gown and her wedding.  We found out that she would be at Erinshire Gardens for her wedding and reception.  Her consultant quickly navigated through 100’s of gowns to find her the perfect gown.  Belle’s even located hanging stock of her gown in her size and color, and received her gown back here at the store within a week!  Talk about totally awesome!  (Most wedding gowns have to be made from scratch and take a minimum of 12 weeks to arrive).

Then we rushed her alterations with our fabulous seamstress.  In three weeks time, she had everything planned.  She selected tuxes, created a beautiful color pallet of oranges and black, booked her wedding photography and was done!

Planning a wedding is easy when you have the right help.  This bride took advantage of everything that Belle’s has to offer and saved time and money.

Carmen even had time to have her bridal portraits made prior to the wedding!

Good luck to you and your new husband!  You guys were a blast to work with!  I love this shot from your bridal session.  You look perfect, Carmen!

Avoiding Wedding Photography Blunders

Filed under: Photography, Wedding Ideas — admin at 9:02 pm on Friday, August 15, 2008

Besides the gown and your guy, what else is around after the wedding? The flowers die, the food is eaten, the dancing’s done, and what do you have left to remember the most special day of your life? Photographs. Besides your gown, photography is one of the most important purchases for your wedding.

There are tons of things to blunder at your wedding.  Some will go unnoticed and other’s you’ll regret.  This little post is to inform you of the common wedding photography blunders and how to avoid them.  Whether you are a Belle’s Bride or not, every girl deserves to have wedding photos!

Common Wedding Day Photography Blunders:

My budget is for a country wedding. We are spending less than $10K total and I can’t see forking over 20% of that budget to a photographer. Anyone can take a picture, right? Wouldn’t I be better off buying a nice camera and letting my friend shoot it?

Wedding photography is way more complex than your normal snap shots. That is the primary issues here. Add that to the fact that a wedding is a once in a life time event and you have a recipe for disaster by allowing a novice to shoot your wedding.

“Weddings have some of the screwiest lighting situations a photographer will encounter,” according to Mike Ward at Belle’s Photography. This creates all sorts of problems for those who aren’t prepared for it.

I’ve seen brides crying about their photography. 90% of the time it was because they let a family member shoot it. I kid you not, at one wedding the designated photographer was a newly-wed family member. They were too lovey dovey to notice he didn’t remove the lens cap until the entire wedding was over.

TIP:  Just because you have a professional camera doesn’t mean you will get professional results.

Apples and Oranges

When you hire a photographer, you want to make sure they are a wedding photographer. Yes, there are different kinds of photographers, just like there are different kinds of teachers. You wouldn’t enroll in a music class if you want to learn about modern art, and expect to be taught the same thing.

The same holds true with photography.  Comparing a child photographer and a sports photographer is like comparing an apple to an orange.  They are both fruit, but they are different.  A child photographer has a different daily experience and most likely different equipment than a wedding photographer. A wedding photographer will have lenses that preform in dim lighting, from very far away, and can go very wide. Photographers have equipment according to their specialty. If they state they have a specialty, pay attention to it and don’t beg a puppy photographer to shoot your wedding.

TIP: Size DOES matter (lens size).  Wedding photographers have the correct assortment of lenses to make sure no one is inches away while you say ‘I do.’

The Hack Factor

There are people who decide to shoot weddings, put up a pretty website using stock photos purchased off the internet, take about $1,000 from you, and they have NEVER shot a wedding before in their life. You will most likely get the same junk random relatives would have gotten. “You will see everything from severe issues with exposure to noise to white balance - assuming they even get the shots,” according to Mike, owner of Belle’s Photography. Yes, there are shots wedding photographers KNOW they have to nail. Novice NewBs don’t know that and are not prepared to take it on.

So, how do you figure out if the photographer you are considering is a hack or the real deal? Fool proof method is certification via the Professional Photographers of America. The photographer had to pass a rigorous test to prove themselves competent. It is easy to check, just log into the PPA website and do a search.

The next method to preventing the ‘Hack Factor’ is a little more time consuming, but worth it. When you talk to your photographer, ask them questions. Ask why they use what equipment they use, how many shooters you’ll get, will they be the one to shoot your wedding, how do you back up your work, do you shoot jpg or raw, can I see proofs from a whole wedding you have recently shot, how do you handle unexpected occurrences (camera body failure, card failure, broken flashes, etc). You can write down what they say and check it, but more importantly - can they definitively answer you. If you stump your photographer, its a good clue he or she is still a novice.

The photographers we recommend have shot many weddings. Belle’s Photography even teaches other professional photographers how to shoot weddings at wedding photography workshops. They are up to their eyeballs in this stuff every day - and you can tell. Their photos are magnificent. To see more of their work, click here.  Our stores even share the same name - Belle’s.  You know you are gonna find beautiful stuff with a name like that!  ;o)

Other resources to find a wedding photographer:

Professional Photographers of America:  Any photographer can join, but you can also find listings of certified photographers and master photographers.

Wedding & Portrait Photographers International:  Again, membership is open to any photographer so inspect your choices.  An award from the WPPI is something worth noting.

Wedding Photojournalistic Association:  This is a listing of PJ wedding photographers.  This association does screen its members, and only accepts members with an emphasis on wedding photojournalism (they follow you around, rather than dragging you from pose to pose.  PJ = no poses).

Wanna free resort stay?

Filed under: Photography, Promos — admin at 11:12 am on Wednesday, July 16, 2008

OK, I just heard about a promo that Belle’s Photography is running until August.  It is for brides who book a wedding photography package with them.  I don’t have all the details, so you are best talking with Mike over there.

What do ya get? A FREE resort stay for a whole freaking week at a posh resort!  It’s for 7 days and 6 nights and Belle’s Photography has paid all the resort accommodation fees for you, except tax.  The resort stay is valued at $2500!  The resorts are owned by RCI, the worlds largest resort timeshare owners, so you know it’s good.

Sound too good to be true?  Yeah, I thought maybe, so I looked into it.  Apparently RCI has over 330,000 weeks each year where their rooms are left empty.  That is how Belle’s Photography was able to arrange such a sweet deal for you.  If you tried to just call up and book - $2500.  If you do it via Belle’s Photography you only pay tax!  Which is around $250.  How sweet a deal is that?!?!

Shoot, I should go buy a wedding photography package.  I hear you can go to lots of places in the US - like the Poconos (romantic), but honey, I would so be going to Barcelona or some sweet European city!  I’m getting all excited just thinking about it.

Anyway, I talked to Mike the other day and he told me about this promo.  It starts TODAY, July 16th and ends on August 1st.  All you need to do to get the resort stay is put down your deposit on a wedding package.  Belle’s Photography packages start around $1750 and they travel all over the place, so if you aren’t in Abilene, don’t worry.  Call them anyway.

BTW - in case you didn’t know, Belle’s Photography shoots all the photos that are in our store and all of our ad pieces.  If you are a bride - you HAVE to look at them.  They have AWESOME stuff!

Here is their contact info:
