10 Tips for Finding the Perfect Prom Dress

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin at 12:16 pm on Tuesday, May 4, 2010

Here are 10 tips for finding the perfect prom dress.  Whether you live in Abilene or New York, these helpful tid bits will make finding the perfect gown easier and more fun!

1.  TRY STUFF ON! Let’s face it, a prom gown is not the same as a sun dress. It has yards and yards of fabric intricately sewn together to make some sort of shape – that is 100% undistinguishable on the hanger. Try it on!

2.  FORGET THE ADS: Those models wearing the designer gown in the ad you are looking at is a good reference point to start from, but that is all it is good for. Photos can be manipulated to make a dress look like it does something that it does not. Never trust a photo. (Mind you, a pro award-winning photographer is giving you this tip).

3.  SKIP THE CAMERA: Trust your eyes! Snapping a crappy pic with your iphone is a HORRIBLE way to choose a gown. And we all know that cameras add 15 lbs. Bad lighting can make a super fab dress look like rubbish. Trust your eyeballs. The see fine details that your camera cannot (eg sparkle), plus you’ll look thinner.

4.  DECIDE WHILE YOU ARE IN IT: If you have to sleep on it – it’s not your dress, keep looking. “Sleeping on it” is code for shopping losers who have been schnookered into buying crap they didn’t like or want. Don’t worry, it’s happened to all of us. Those who recover learn this trick. And you are not a shopping loser. Look in the mirror and address each like and dislike with THIS dress. It is much easier to decide if it’s THEE dress while you are wearing it.

5.  SAVE THE INTERNET FOR NON-CRUCIAL STUFF: Does it matter what prom gown you wear? If the answer is no, then go nuts and buy your gown from cheapassgowns.com and have at it. If you answered yes, see steps 1 - 4. If you purchase online, then you have a fundamental flaw - you can’t try the dress on.

6.  DON’T EVEN THINK IT: You might be thinking I can so try on the dress – this shop down the street carries my dress. I’ll just try it on there and order it online. You have two major problems with this mindset. #1 – The shop you are using is individually owned and operated. That means the dress you are trying on and the services (consultants, dressing rooms, and time) cost something. To go into a privately owned store and use their stock and staff, tie up dressing rooms, and then buy online is whorey. If you have trouble rationalizing this – look at it this way. This is someone’s aunt, sister, or mother who is trying to feed her kids. You go in waste her time, wear out her dresses thereby devaluing them, and then you say sionora and buy from the net. It’s technically not stealing, but it should leave you feeling like scum because it IS a scummy thing to do. If you have no conscious and can look the woman helping you in the eye and still feel okay with yourself, you have a second major issue. #2 - Online retailers don’t give a crap about you. If you have a problem with your order, your dress is damaged, you need a seamstress, or you need your gown steamed – you are 100% on your own. The most often net ordering issue I hear is that they never placed the order for the gown with the vendor. You’ll find out with less than one weeks notice (assuming you even get notice) and then you are back to square one with no dress. This happens VERY OFTEN. It is a major problem because no one thinks it will happen to them. You also have the problem of the net vendor taking your money, not ordering your dress, and going under. And since this is not a local person who has to sit next to you at church, they keep your money and don’t feel guilty about it. Nameless and faceless business are NOT your friend. Save the internet purchases for stuff that doesn’t matter if it shows up or not.

7.  MATCHING YOUR MAN: For the love of all that is good – tell your guy to make sure his butt is in the tux rental store at least 2 weeks early. No, you can’t walk into the store pick one, and walk back out. It typically doesn’t work like that. And all the good tuxes get snatched early during prom season, so don’t wait until it’s too late. Your date will end up being the screw-up who has to wear his Easter/funeral suit to prom – which does NOT match your awesome dress.

8.  UNDER WHERE? Some prom gowns have low dipping backs and necklines that would make a hooker blush. So what the heck do you wear under the dress? Normal bras and panties will show. Yes you are right, but you don’t have to go commando (please don’t). Spanx makes an awesome smoothing control top panty. They look like the top of support hose and they smooth rolls and bumps to make your look super skinny. Plus, they don’t leave a panty line. I’ve also heard the generic Spanx suck and roll. So spend the $20-$40 and get the real ones. And the bra – there are lots of different types. Some gowns even have them built in. If you need a little more support than your gown offers, a popular choice is the “chicken cutlet” bra. It’s a molded plastic (soft) bra that adheres to your skin. It gives support, is backless, and allows for low dipping necklines. Don’t forget the petticoat if you are wearing a ball gown, otherwise you’ll look like a frumpy mess.

9.  SHOES ARE ICING: Shoes are “icing” which means they are the finishing touch to this ensemble you’ve spent a ton of time and money pulling together. Way too often I’ve heard of girls going cheap-O on the shoes and by the end of prom night, their feet look like they’ve been dragged across a bed of nails as a result. Lots of these girls think that all dress shoes are created equally horribly, so they take their photos while looking awesome and then kick off their $10 heels in a pile that would put any 1st grade shoe scramble to shame. If a shoe fits properly: it won’t make you bleed. That includes blisters and toenail mutilation. Cheap shoes don’t fit right and rub everything like a horny dog, until you’d rather die than walk. Keep in mind: It can take longer to find a good pair of shoes than it did to find your dress, so don’t put it off. And remember rules 1, 4 & 5 apply to shoes too.

10.  UTILIZE YOUR RESOURCES: Way too many girls think they are 100% on their own with all this. They have no idea what to do, where to start, and so they send mom out scouring the racks hoping to find something. That is a total waste of time for you and her. Totally skip that part. What you should do is make an appointment at your local boutique. Some may require it, so call ahead and ask. If you want to have a more relaxing shopping experience, ask when they are less busy and plan to go then. You’ll get a lot more help and attention when things are slower. And USE the resources your boutique offers. Such as your consultant. She’s seen 100s of gowns on bodies like yours. She knows what styles slim, add curves in the right spots, and hide everything you want hidden. Tell her what colors you like, what general feel you are looking for, and let her help you. A good consultant makes shopping fun and easy. If you get a dud, go somewhere else. And beware the chain stores (David’s, Alfred Angelo, etc) as these are poser boutiques. Anything that is run by “the man” doesn’t take the time, attention, or give expertise, that you deserve. Their dresses’ workmanship reflects this. They use glue on their dresses. Need I say more? And you deserve the best! Keep away from those overpriced chains. A nice perk of doing so is getting something unique (for about the same price) that is new, has no glue, and prom shopping can actually be fun. :o)

They are so cute! Little red bows, with an antique crystal button, and a zebra print board. Every bride and prom client gets a clip board to sign in on at the beginning of her appointment. We topped off the look with some fine linen paper.

Feel the posh. Ooooh. Aaaaah. ;o)

Private Appointments, Custom Gowns, Oh My!

Did you know that Belle’s Bridal is a swank New York style boutique located right smack in the happenin part of lil old Abilene? Why you ask? Why is there a NY style boutique in Abilene? Easy - the owners are from the Big Apple!

So, what the heck is a NY style boutique? It’s to die for!  A boutique is a swank store that is small on purpose.  Boutiques generally carry specialty items, custom items, and one of a kind items.  They do not specialize in stacking deep and selling them cheap - and that phrase makes boutique groupies cringe.  No, a boutique is a place to experience shopping at it’s finest.  It’s a place where a personal shopper will wait on you and help you find the exact thing you were looking for.  And the consultants at Belle’s Bridal in Abilene are so great, they can help you find the exact gown you want, even if you have no clue what it is yet!

So, now that you know what a boutique is, let’s add the NY part.  NY is one of the greatest cities in the world in its fashion forward thinking.  And it’s boutiques can accommodate the vast variety of shoppers who live in that area.  They do this by knowing their area of expertise inside out.  We know weddings inside out.  That makes your time of being the bride MUCH easier.  Our clients can utilize our expertise to the fullest, which makes being a bride more fun.

Now I’m sure you want to hear how all this was applied to our Abilene boutique!  Our swank boutique is a shopping experience.  From the time you call to set your appointment for bridal, prom, or mom’s dresses, through the appointment, and beyond - you’ll see how it feels to be a Belle’s Boutique client.  I can sum it up in two words - lavishly pampered.  You’ll be assigned your own personal shopper during your private appointment in our relaxing boutique.  They are a specialist in their field and should have the answers to all your questions and have the answers to lots more questions you didn’t know to ask.  Her job is to help you find the perfect dress for YOU.  She will help you navigate our stock of designer dresses and gowns to find the one that it perfect for you!

Amongst the dresses we have hanging at Belle’s, you will find that no two prom dresses are identical.  This helps to assure that you don’t show up at prom with 5 other girls wearing your dress.

And Belle’s wedding gowns!  OMG!  You’re gonna die.  If you have never been in a NY style boutique, you are gonna love it.  Our buyers have the latest styles, while still maintaining classic wedding gowns for more traditional brides.  Belle’s even has a custom line of gowns that are ONE OF A KIND.  The gown was specially commissioned for our store - there is no other like it.  Belle’s Bridal Boutique is about helping you find the perfect dress for YOU.

If you are bargain shopping, keep going!  We are not your store.  Our designer wedding gowns range from $1,000-$5,000.  Our prom dresses are mostly $500-$700.

Belle’s Bridal Boutique is for the woman who wants what she wants.  Call now to make your appointment and prepare to be pampered!  (325)673-0033
